Virginia Department of Education Policies For Gender Expansive Students Finalized!

We are happy to announce that the proposed policies for the equitable treatment of gender expansive (transgender and gender non-binary) public K-12 Virginia school students are proposed no more! They are now finalized! As a bit of background information, Delegate Marcus Simon’s HB145 and Senator Jennifer Boysko’s SB 161 bills codified protections for transgender and gender non-binary students in Virginia schools. The bills instructed the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) to draft the model policies for these groups of students. Now that the public comment period is over and the policies have been finalized, School Boards will be required to adopt these policies (or policies that may even been more comprehensive) at the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year. TGEA would like to thank all who were instrumental in the creation of these policies and those who spoke up in favor of them during the public comment period. Many Virginians are working towards making this state inclusive for all! If you wish to see these policies, you can access them HERE.

TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE 2018 – Tues. Nov 20

The MCC NoVA TransFormation Ministry, in partnership with TGEA, and the UUCF, is organizing and co-sponsoring the 10th Annual Northern Virginia Interfaith Trans Day of Remembrance Service on 20 November at 7 pm at the UU Congregation of Fairfax. The Transgender Day of Remembrance occurs annually on November 20, and is a day to memorialize those who have been killed over the previous year as a result of transphobia, or the hatred or fear of transgender and gender non-conforming people. This event also serves to bring attention to the continued violence endured by the trans* communities, especially those who exist on the margins. On average, for the past few years, there have been two such murders in this country every month. Nearly half of these murders go unsolved. If you would like to help support or participate in this service in any way, please contact:

*Embraces a continuum of gender variation and expression.

The 10th Annual Northern Virginia Interfaith
Trans* Day of Remembrance Service will be held:
Tues, November 20, 7:00 PM
at The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax

July 15 – 4PM – Picnic!!

Following up on last year’s wonderful summer picnic and co-sponsored this year by FCPS Pride, MCC of Northern Virginia, TGEA, AGLA, Metro DC PFLAG, GLSEN Nova, and Nova Pride, a community picnic for all (families, couples or individuals) will be held Sunday from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Nottaway Park in Vienna (in the Pavilion, Shelter #1 at 9537 Courthouse Road, Vienna 22181). Bring your own meat or veggies to grill– charcoal, water, watermelon and cake will be provided–there will be both a meat and non-meat grill. Nova Pride is organizing a volleyball game and other things for teens. Families are welcome–we will have foam swords, but feel free to bring other toys. There is a small playground. It is entirely free of charge, but you can donate small amounts to cover the space rental and supplies. The weather forecast is for hot but the picnic space is in a shaded grove.
It will be so wonderful to visit with so many who are doing so many amazing things during a time of relaxation with tasty food and drink. We so hope to see you there!

November 2nd Friday Meeting – Fri Nov 10

This gathering provides a safe space of connection, peer-facilitated trans support and community building. We are open to those in gender transition, considering the possibility (even remotely), or those who have completed transition (however the individual may define that), and to anyone anywhere along the gender spectrum, whether static or dynamic. Significant Others, Friends, Family, and Allies are welcome to attend.
Second Friday is composed of three sub-groups: Main, Parents, Tweens & Teens. All groups gather in the main Sanctuary at 7 PM on the second Friday of each month. Please join us on Friday, 10 November starting at 7 pm.
