TGEA Statement Regarding the Supreme Court’s Lifting of Injunction Now Allowing the Limiting of Transgender Service in our Military.

City of Fairfax, 23 January 2019 – Today the Supreme Court lifted an injunction which allowed transgender Americans to voluntarily serve in the armed services of the United States. The Trump Administration can now deny this basic right and obligation of citizenship. Very few Americans today step forward and volunteer to put their lives on the line for our country. How can we deny that service to our fellow citizens who happen to be transgender? For the reasons listed below TGEA strongly opposes this action and urges fair minded Americans to contact their representatives to advocate for the right of all Americans to serve their country.

The Declaration of Independence stated that “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights.” Subsequently our Constitution denied many of these rights to women, African Americans and indigenous peoples. Later practice denied Gay and Lesbian Americans their rights as full citizens. To our credit, over the last 150 years many of these injustices were removed. In 2016 the Obama Administration removed an unjustified denial of rights by allowing transgender Americans to openly pledge their lives and liberty in the defense of our country.

There is no evidence being transgender prevents one from serving their nation nor will being transgender harm “good order and discipline.” This is demonstrated by the honorable service of the tens of thousands of transgender veterans. Moreover the Trump Administration policy recognizes this by allowing currently serving transgender military personnel to continue their service – the policy only denies the service of new personnel who choose to transition. The only conclusion one can draw from this policy is that if one is qualified while serving as a male/female then they are unqualified as a female/male. This is discrimination based on sex in its purest form.

As Americans we are a fair people. Thousands of times we have pledged that we are a nation “with liberty and justice for all.” If one truly believes in this Pledge of Allegiance then one must reject this unjust and discriminatory policy.

TGEA will continue its main mission of education to help Americans more fully understand what it means to be transgender and how best we can support those who wish to serve our nation in the future.

The Transgender Education Association of Greater Washington D.C. (TGEA) was established as an attempt to bring together the varied segments of the local gender community into a nurturing and supportive network of individuals. Now, as we enter our 30th year, our other goals are just as important: to provide a supportive environment and day-to-day assistance for transgender individuals and their significant others, friends, family and allies (SOFFAs), helping them overcome their sense of isolation and providing educational and social opportunities.

This gathering provides a safe space of connection, peer-facilitated trans support and community building. We are open to those in gender transition, considering the possibility (even remotely), or those who have completed transition (however the individual may define that), and to anyone anywhere along the gender spectrum, whether static or dynamic. Significant Others, Friends, Family, and Allies are welcome to attend.

Second Friday is composed of four sub-groups: Main, Parents, Tweens & Teens, and Transmasculine/Non-Binary. All groups gather in the main Sanctuary at 7 PM on the second Friday of each month.

In the event inclement weather occurs which may affect a Second Friday Gathering, information regarding cancellation will be posted to the TGEA webpage and the TGEA Facebook page as soon as possible.

TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE 2018 – Tues. Nov 20


The MCC NoVA TransFormation Ministry, in partnership with TGEA, and the UUCF, is organizing and co-sponsoring the 10th Annual Northern Virginia Interfaith Trans Day of Remembrance Service on 20 November at 7 pm at the UU Congregation of Fairfax. The Transgender Day of Remembrance occurs annually on November 20, and is a day to memorialize those who have been killed over the previous year as a result of transphobia, or the hatred or fear of transgender and gender non-conforming people. This event also serves to bring attention to the continued violence endured by the trans* communities, especially those who exist on the margins. On average, for the past few years, there have been two such murders in this country every month. Nearly half of these murders go unsolved. Join us for the Equality VIrginia (EV) Transgender Information and Empowerment Summit (TIES), this year at a new location in Richmond, VA. TIES brings hundreds of folks together for a conference designed to meet the interests and needs of transgender individuals, partners, parents, youth, and allies to strengthen the transgender community across Virginia!

July 15 – 4PM – Picnic!!

Following up on last year’s wonderful summer picnic and co-sponsored this year by FCPS Pride, MCC of Northern Virginia, TGEA, AGLA, Metro DC PFLAG, GLSEN Nova, and Nova Pride, a community picnic for all (families, couples or individuals) will be held Sunday from 4:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Nottaway Park in Vienna (in the Pavilion, Shelter #1 at 9537 Courthouse Road, Vienna 22181). Bring your own meat or veggies to grill– charcoal, water, watermelon and cake will be provided–there will be both a meat and non-meat grill. Nova Pride is organizing a volleyball game and other things for teens. Families are welcome–we will have foam swords, but feel free to bring other toys. There is a small playground. It is entirely free of charge, but you can donate small amounts to cover the space rental and supplies. The weather forecast is for hot but the picnic space is in a shaded grove.
It will be so wonderful to visit with so many who are doing so many amazing things during a time of relaxation with tasty food and drink. We so hope to see you there!
